Tips for planning the perfect proposal

Last Updated: February 15, 2024By Categories: Lifestyle

A proposal is one of the most momentous moments of your life and that’s why you want to ensure it all goes smoothly. You want to show your other half your commitment to them with a large romantic gesture and end the day or evening with a ring on their finger. If you are looking to plan the perfect proposal, we have some top tips to help you on your way.

Choose a sentimental location

When planning the perfect proposal, start by choosing a sentimental location. Choose a place that is special to both of you – the restaurant you went to for your first date? The place you met? A favourite holiday destination? The place you had your first kiss? Whether you propose at that exact place or make it part of the journey before you propose, it will make the day special and the proposal even more romantic.

Go above and beyond

When proposing you want to go above and beyond to make the day truly special. So why not hire a chauffeur for the occasion? They could be on hand to drive you around to different locations and be there to drop you off and pick you up again at the end of the night. It’s opulent, luxurious and the perfect place to toast a glass of champagne on your way home as you celebrate your newly engaged status.

Have a backup plan

Unfortunately, things don’t always go to plan, so make sure you have a backup plan in case something isn’t right on the day. If you plan to propose on the beach but it’s raining, have something else in mind. Or maybe you’ve planned a restaurant but for some reason, your reservation is cancelled, have an alternative place in the back of your mind that you can turn to.

Keep the ring safe

From the second you buy the ring, to the moment you put it on your partner’s finger, make sure to keep the ring in a safe place. When taking it out with you for the special day, keep it in a ring box and consider wearing trousers with zips to make it extra secure. Insurance is always advised in case something does happen as replacing an engagement ring can be expensive.

Plan a celebration

Once they say yes, what are your plans after? Put some plans together to celebrate the proposal. Book a bar or restaurant that you can go to or have a cake and some bubbles ready for your friends and family to come round to celebrate. How you celebrate is all down to you and your partner. Some people like big parties, others like something low-key as they don’t want to be the centre of attention.

Hire a photographer

Getting engaged is a special moment. Hire a photographer to capture the moment so that you can remember it forever. Photographers are experts at capturing the money shot and being discreet. You could have these pictures framed or print them out to be displayed on your wedding day. If you wanted to take it to the next level, you could even hire a videographer to film the moment. If you don’t want to spend too much, you could get a friend to hide and capture it on a phone. The quality of phone pictures is extremely good.

Be flexible

Don’t have your heart set on proposing at a certain time or on a certain day. Aim for it, but remember that sometimes things can get in the way. Proposing can be stressful and adding barriers like this can make it even more stressful. A proposal is always going to be stressful so wait for the right moment, even if it is on a different day than what you planned.

Be personal

Think about who your partner is as a person and plan the proposal to match their personality. If they like grand gestures, then plan something large. If they prefer something intimate, match your proposal to this. The last thing you want is for them to feel uncomfortable due to your proposal being the opposite of who they are. Try to personalise the proposal, everyone is different so try to add the little thing you know they love.
